The cost of building a website on Shopify varies depending on the plan you choose to implement. Broadly there are three different plans to choose from Basic Shopify, Shopify and Advanced Shopify (each plans offers a 25% discount when billed annually).
Basic Shopify costs $56 AUD a month and is recommended for new businesses or those new to selling in-person.
Shopify costs $149 AUD a month and is most appropriate for expanding businesses with 1 retail store in place already.
Advanced Shopify is priced at $575 AUD and is the best deal for growing businesses of retail stores and above.
If you utilise Shopify’s in-house payment gateway, Shopify Payments, you’ll incur no additional transaction fees on your sales. That said, like most e-commerce platforms, Shopify does claim a percentage from sales that are made through external or third-party gateways.
With that in mind, if you do utilise one of the 100+ third-party payment gateways supported by Shopify (such as PayPal, Amazon Pay or Braintree), then the transaction percentages Shopify will claim depend on your plan:
Basic Shopify: third-party transaction fee + 2% of the cost of product and shipping.
Shopify: third-party transaction fee + 1% of the cost of product and shipping.
Advanced Shopify: third party transaction fee + 0.5% of the cost of product and shipping.
Admittedly these additional fees might raise a few eyebrows for the uninitiated, so it’s worth noting that these claims are made, in part, due to the financial outlay Shopify accrues while affording the premium maintenance of your site and its subscribers; something that sets it apart from the majority of e-commerce platforms.
Furthermore, as Shopify supports over 100 other payment gateways and third party processors, the flexibility it offers more than makes up for the small transaction fees incurred should you utilise them.
It’s also important to remember that most e-commerce platforms take a percentage off the top of your sales.
For example, eBay has a particularly complicated structure that calculates additional transaction fees depending on the number, category and overall value of listings.
Likewise, Etsy will charge $0.20 USD for every 4 months an item is listed and also claims a transaction fee of 5% when items are sold. So, in truth, Shopify’s additional fees are relatively minor and certainly not out of the ordinary.
It would, however, be dishonest not to acknowledge that there are e-commerce platforms that don’t claim additional transaction fees. The likes of Magento and WooCommerce charge no such transaction fees for the use of their gateways. That said, as with Shopify, you will still incur a fee from a third-party gateway provider.
Equally, you’ll find many other e-commerce platforms have higher or simply more costs for a user during the development phase of the website. Combine this with the flexibility and ease of use that Shopify delivers and you’re definitely earning value for your money.
To conclude, Shopify does take a percentage of sales, where third party gateways are used, but the fee is paid back into your site through the excellent service it provides.
Yes, Shopify is an excellent website builder and has been universally praised for its accessibility and the standard of website it provides.
What’s more, the platform’s popularity demonstrates its value perfectly. Reservedly, Shopify powers over 800,000 businesses and external research conducted by the Website Builder Expert has shown that Shopify outperforms its competitors with ease.
This success is due in no small part to its aforementioned ease of use, third-party gateway support (100+) and the sheer number of themes and apps.
Ultimately, under third party testing and research, Shopify comes out time and again as the go-to e-commerce solution.
Shopify is already a very efficient and valuable e-commerce tool and so it’s not uncommon for digital marketers to wonder what the difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus is, and indeed whether the latter is worth purchasing.
In short, Shopify Plus does everything that Shopify can as well as offering lots of smart additional features that can help take your business into the stratosphere. However, depending on where you are on your e-commerce journey, you might feel that the quality service offered by “basic” Shopify is more than sufficient.
The best way to assess which edition of the e-commerce platform is best for you, then, is to explore the additional features provided by a Shopify Plus subscription.
From Organisation Admin and Customized Checkout to an analytics dashboard and lower transaction fees, Shopify Plus provides more detailed and changeable access to each corner of your e-commerce site.
Put indelicately, it can change your business experience entirely.
So, if you’re interested in the minutiae of what the package has to offer or are keen to discover whether it’s time to upgrade, we recommend reading our ‘Is Shopify Plus Worth It?‘ article.
In the meantime, it’s safe to say that whether or not you should invest in Shopify Plus depends entirely on your personal circumstances. Yes, the benefits of the program are plain to see, particularly for big businesses with a high turnover and large staff teams.
However, if you’re a new business, the additional cost might be a bridge too far while you’re finding your feet. Thus, it’s probably a good idea to begin with Basic Shopify and then upgrade as the demand arises.
